Welcome Message
Welcome to Issue 2 of the Centennial Heritage Museum Updates Newsletter. Our mailing list has more than doubled since our previous issue, and we want to extend a special welcome to all our new readers.
Many of our new readers opted into the list at our highly successful "A Murder of Crowes" murder mystery dinner. This fun-filled evening brought in over $15,000 in revenue for use in much-needed capital improvements on the museum property.
If you missed the murder mystery, be sure to check out our next dinner event - "Titanic: Voyage to Oblivion." You can read the details below, along with announcements for several other events planned for the upcoming months.
Also new in this issue is the "Program Spotlight" section. In each issue we will feature the details of one of our programs so you can see for yourself all the educational fun available at the museum.
So read on, but don't stop there. Visit our Web site at centennialmuseum.org and then come and visit us for real. We're open to the public on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 1:00 to 5:00 and on Sundays from 11:00 to 3:00.

Program Spotlight - Treasure Island
Yo Ho Ho and a bottle of fun!
One of our best-loved programs is Treasure Island. Here young lads and lasses seeking fame and ill-gotten fortune can become pirates-in-training. The promise of buried treasure lures them, but before they lay their hands on a single coin they have a whole lot to learn. Arrgh!
"Aye, mateys," says the cap'n, "a lot to learn, indeed."
"Do ye know yer way around a ship? Can ye tell the stern from the starboard and the wheel from the anchor? Do ye know a good treasure ship when ye see it? And can ye design yer own to carry home all yer loot?"
"And how about navigation? Can ye read yer compass and find yer bearings? Can ye follow a map and spot the landmarks, or will yer search for treasure be in vain? And speaking of maps, do ye know how to draw yer own? And what will ye do if the clues to the treasure are in code?"
"And what about acting like a pirate? Do ye know yer 'pirate-speak'? Can you 'ahoy' and 'avast' and 'blow me down' with the best of 'em? Do ye know how to design a flag that strikes fear in the hearts of all who see it?"
"Well, me hearties, if ye don't know all of what I've told ye, ye'll never become the terror of the seas. Ye'd best come learn with us before ye shove off, or ye might wind up walking the plank."
Treasure Island comes in three different "flavors."
- Classic Treasure Island is a two-hour educational program geared for schools and Scout groups. It places particular emphasis on the educational aspects of ship design, compass use, and code solving. The program is most appropriate for grades 3 and above, although it can be adapted for younger students/scouts.
- Treasure Island Party is a one and a half hour variant intended for birthday parties. Although many of the same subjects are covered, more emphasis is placed on having fun than on depth of learning.
- Summer Treasure Island is a four-hour program offered only during our summer season. It adds exciting games and extra activities, and includes a second treasure hunt with a different twist.
