Welcome Message
Welcome to Issue 4 of the Centennial Heritage Museum Updates Newsletter. It has been a very long time since we've put out a proper newsletter. I apologize for the wait, but I have been very busy with my docenting duties at the museum and with a major expansion to the CHM Web site.
A great many things have happened at the museum since the last newsletter. The Victorian Tea Society's Mothers' Day Tea was a great success and raised funds toward repainting the Kellogg House. The museum also played host to the Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce's May "Business After Hours" mixer.
Several upgrades to the CHM grounds have been completed recently. Our new restrooms have opened to replace the crowded and crumbling older facilities. Also, Boy Scout troop 850 has placed landscape lighting in and around the rose garden, greatly enhancing the beauty of our grounds for weddings and other evening events.
Our expanded Web site is also newsworthy. We have added four all-new areas to the site:
- Garden Weddings - an area just for those who are looking for a beautiful venue in which to tie the proverbial knot
- Centennial Kids - a fun and educational zone for our younger visitors, including the 18,000 schoolchildren who participate in our field trip programs every year
- Teachers' Corner - resources related to our programs for use by teachers
- Victorian Tea Society - an area for and about the Victorian Tea Society, an auxiliary organization dedicated to providing financial support for the museum while celebrating all things Victorian
We would also like to remind everyone that spring is a beautiful time to visit the Centennial Heritage Museum. Our jacaranda trees and our jasmine arbor are in full bloom, as are most of the roses in our garden. The hills of our nature area are covered with wildflowers as well. We're open to the public on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 1:00 to 5:00 and on Sundays from 11:00 to 3:00.

Summer Programs
This summer CHM is proud to offer three special week-long summer day camps. If you have children or know someone who does, be sure to check out these exciting programs. Spaces are limited, so call now for reservations.
Adventure Week: July 17-21
Come and join us for some of our most popular programs all in one week! Set sail for Treasure Island, walk in Tom Sawyer's footsteps, follow Alice through Wonderland, solve mysteries with Sherlock Holmes, and be ready for some exciting surprises. All this plus lots of games and crafts, too!
Old-Fashioned Summer Fun Week: July 31-August 4
Explore the games and toys of the past and present. Play old-time parlor games at the Kellogg House estate. Build and fly a kite. Try your hands (and feet) at croquet, sack races, marbles, archery, water games, and more. Schedule includes fun-filled themed days and an old-fashioned summer picnic.
Silent Movie Week: August 14-18
Become a movie mogul! Join our CHM production company in making a silent film from start to finish. The production crew will write a screenplay, scout locations, plan scenes, and create costumes, props and sets, as well as act in, direct, and shoot the final movie.
Guest presenter Ron Chaney*, great grandson of silent film star Lon Chaney, will be here to share memorabilia, movie clips, and stories about old-time movie life that have been passed down through his family. You will also learn from other show-business insiders* such as stunt performers, special effects designers, and make-up artists.
Each crew member will receive a DVD of the masterpiece they created, including a behind-the-scenes look at the production.

Program Spotlight - Weekend Specials
Introducing the Second Sunday Adventure Club
The Second Sunday Adventure Club is a new and exciting series of programs for boys and girls ages 7 to 12. Programs are scheduled on the second Sunday of each month. Times may vary due to other museum activities.
Programs are two hours long and cost $10 per child.
Creepy Crawlies - June 11 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm
Beetles and butterflies and bees, oh my!
Second Sunday Adventure Club invites you to get buggy with our creepy insect neighbors. Whether you call them insects or just plain bugs, you'll discover some amazing things about these critters that live in every part of our world. Throw in a few spiders and worms (even though they're not insects) and you're set for one creepy crawly day. Learn how insects fly and how they see, collect them to study up close, and even take home some tasty bug recipes. (Have you ever tried chocolate-covered grasshoppers?)
More exciting Second Sunday programs for the month ahead:
- July 9 - Enviroment Art and Science
- August 13 - Secrets of the Titanic
- September 10 - Gold Rush
